Alternative stock

The basis of every certification is the use of alternative feedstocks. These can be waste and residues, renewable-energy-derived feedstock, but also sustainably grown agricultural raw materials and forest biomass. Materials derived from alternative feedstocks can be classified into the four categories described below :

  • Circular Material
    • Circular materials come from fossil-based waste and residues that have been recycled through mechanical or chemical processes. These include sources like mixed plastic waste, discarded textiles, or end-of-life tires.
  • Bio-Circular Material
    • Bio-circular materials are produced from waste of biological origin. Common examples include used cooking oil (UCO), tall oil, food waste, and residues from agriculture or forestry.
  • Bio-Based Material
    • The ISCC sustainability criteria for agricultural and forestry operations are built around six key principles. These principles address environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic viability to ensure sustainable sourcing.
  • Renewable Energy-Derived Material
    • Materials can qualify for ISCC PLUS certification if renewable energy sources are used as part of the production process. For example, electricity from solar, wind, or hydropower can be used to produce sustainable end products through innovative conversion technologies.
